Vision and Patents

(12/13/2011)

What is vision?

When we talk about vision, we do not mean a psychic process or premonition that is open to Prophets, but rather hard won development of rational concepts and special skills that need to be developed around organized daydreaming.  Collecting state of the art data and organizing it so that you develop a sense of where the technology and marketplace are going is important to planning ahead for your corporate IP growth.  Planning the development of new technologies that support the future of the business is one of the keys to corporate success.  The vision of what the corporation is and will become are built on this foundation.

Building dreams into reality

Everyone daydreams about what might be.  The subconscious mind is constantly putting ideas together in new ways that create something new or a new way to do something that has been tedious in the past. How we follow these dreams and then bring them into being is one of the primary skills of invention.  Vision is part of a sense of the future and what is possible.  There are some individuals who are much better at Vision.  How they produce superior results that guide their company is discussed with several case studies of successful visionaries who have created significant Intellectual Property or patents.

Vision Theories

Our favorite theorists about Vision are:

·        John Lienhard on technology roadmaps

·        Granville Ott on filling the technology and market gaps with Design to Cost

·        Youram Solomon on how to see what will be needed in your technology and marketplace in 4 to 5 years and then going about inventing it

Who do you think is really good at describing theories about Vision Development?
