Merry Christmas from Inventors

(12/24/2011)

Did you know that Christmas Cards originated in London in 1843?

Previously people had exchanged handwritten greeting via the postal system. By 1822 the post office begins to hire extra post men to prevent bottlenecks in the US Postal System during the Christmas season. London artist John C. Horsley designed the first Christmas Card. Horsley was a wealthy business man who wanted to wish his professional acquaintances a “merry Christmas.” Horsley’s card depicted a good deed of clothing and feeding the poor. “The inscription read ‘merry Christmas and Happy new year to your.”   Christmas cards became the rage in America in the 1870s.  Boston Lithographer Louis Prang a native of Germany began publishing cards and earned the title of father of the American Christmas Card.
